The best part of this Dubai desert safari is the change of pace. One minute you are in a city of towers and traffic; soon you are climbing the red dunes of Lahbab in a 4WD Land Cruiser, with open sand around you and the late-day sun turning everything copper.

I like the mix of action and easy cultural activities. The dune drive and sunset photo stop give you the thrill and scenery, while the camel ride, henna, Arabic clothing, dinner, and live shows fill out the evening without asking you to plan several separate outings.

The main thing to watch is the shared-tour setup. Pick-up is by Land Cruiser with up to six people, and one recent booking had poor communication about the meeting point. Also, the best seating near the entertainment costs extra, so the advertised $49 price may not cover every comfort you want.
